200/$10 by 2010
So far this year, we've sold 15,936 Abort73.com T-shirts (through August). Last year's total was 13,848. The skeptic might look at those numbers and conclude that Abort73's real agenda is to sell lots of T-shirts and make lots of money. That would be a wrong conclusion.
Last year, when all was said and done, we had a net profit of $13,560 in merchandise sales. That's $1,130 a month, split between 2 full-time employees, a part-time accountant and all of our general operating expenses. So far this year, we've spent $19,072 more on merchandise and shipping than we've made in return. You can track these numbers month by month on our 2009 budget page. Lord willing, our current sales deficit will be eliminated by October – though it's unlikely that 2009's net profit will much exceed last year's number.
All that to say, Abort73 T-shirts are the way we advertise the website, not the way we pay for it. It is the sacrificial giving of various individuals, churches and organizations that makes the marketing and maintenance of Abort73 possible.
For the first 5 months of the year, giving increased each month. For the last four months, giving has decreased each month. May's giving total was $25,767. August's was $3,395. The summer average was $4,318. That's not a level we can survive on. In an effort to head off such drastic fluctuations in the future, I'm hoping to find 200 new people who will commit to giving $10 a month (roughly 33¢ a day).
During our brief life as a ministry, one-time gifts have played a huge role in keeping us afloat and moving us forward. It is the regular giving, however, which provides the most stability – helping us better budget and plan, by giving us a better idea of what we'll have to work with each month.
Please take some time to prayerfully consider whether our work is something you'd be willing to commit $10 a month to. And join us in prayer as we ask God to favor us with 200 new monthly donors. I'll keep you posted on the cumulative response through the end of the year as we pray to reach 200/$10 by 2010.
Thank you for your prayer and support!
