Abortion Story: Callao, Peru

I was 19 years old when I got pregnant for the first time. It was Christmas of 2016. I was excited, despite breaking up with my boyfriend a couple weeks before I found out about my pregnancy.

I broke up with him because he cheated on me several times. I didn't tell him of the pregnancy because I knew he didn't care. He didn't try to come back once we broke up.

I was excited, though, until I told my parents on New Year's Eve. They were mad at me because "I was too young to raise a child on my own”—a silly excuse, because it was obvious they were more worried about their status. They told me I had to get rid of it.

Abortion is illegal in Peru, but being that my family is a rich one, they arranged an appointment for me at a Marie Stopes clinic in Mexico City just a week after I told them. They did all of that behind my back.

I stayed in Mexico City for 10 days after the abortion, which was performed the same day I came to Mexico. It was a horrendous and painful experience, both mentally and physically—though I can't recall much of it nowadays. I came back to Peru with a strong resentment against my parents and tried to kill myself several times since.

Currently, I don't live with them anymore and I only talk with my younger brother, who was the one that supported me and tried to prevent all of this within his possibilities. I also got together with a man I love and I'm pregnant again. Our twins are due to be born in May, but my pregnancy has been delicate and I think it's been that way because of my abortion. :(
