Abort73.com exists to cut through the skewed rhetoric of a broadly pro-choice culture by presenting young people with the conclusive evidence that abortion is a massive injustice, one which has and continues to systematically destroy the most innocent and helpless members of the human race.
Abort73.com further exists as a gateway into the more fundamental questions of human existance. Where does human life come from? From whence does evil emerge? What is the meaning of life?
EXPANDED PURPOSE STATEMENT
Abort73.com exists to demonstrate the simple truth that unborn human beings are fully qualified to be recognized as persons under the law and be protected from any assault that might befall them. The personhood of the unborn is significant on many levels, but primarily because the legal sanction of elective abortion stands or falls on this one issue. The U.S. Supreme Court recognized as much when Justice Harry Blackmun stated in the majority opinion of 1973s Roe v. Wade decision, if this suggestion of (fetal) personhood is established, the [case in support of legal abortion] collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the (14th) Amendment. The Court found, however, that no case could be cited that holds that a fetus is a person within the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. It therefore concluded that a mothers right to privacy went so far as to include the right to terminate her unborn fetus. The justification for this verdict was partially anchored on the assertion that the Court could not resolve the difficult question of when life begins, since those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus. They did qualify their declaration, however, by adding that the judiciary, at this point in the development of man's knowledge, is not in a position to speculate as to the answer (emphasis added).
The primary flaw with this conclusion is that their verdict assumes that they do know when life begins. They assume life begins at birth. Otherwise, how could they rule as they did (declaring that abortion is justified through all nine months of pregnancy)? If there was doubt as to the presence or absence of life, they should have erred on the side of caution. If youre not sure if someone is dead or alive, you dont bury them. You leave them alone (or help them!) until you are absolutely certain. The second flaw in their argument is that the question of lifes beginning has long been a settled matter. There is no debate on this point. The Court itself noted that they were well-acquainted with the well-known facts of fetal development (emphasis added). As far back as 1857, the American Medical Association plainly stated (also referenced in the Roe opinion) that the independent and actual existence of the child before birth, as a living being is a matter of objective science. The AMA deplored the popular ignorance...that the foetus is not alive till after the period of quickening. The medical community has long known that life begins at conception.
Though the argument that mans knowledge was insufficient to rule on lifes beginning was highly suspect in 1973, it is absurd today. Medical technology in the form of 4D ultrasound, direct embryoscopy and fetoscopy, and fetal surgery has opened the womb for all the world to see.
Abort73.com will argue that the Supreme Court made the wrong decision. We will do this by examining the testimony of medical experts, by looking at the photographic evidence, and by taking a look at the historical distribution of the rights of personhood. In the end, we will assert that all human beings no matter their age, no matter their size, no matter their intellectual development deserve the right to life. You can put it another way and say that all human beings deserve the right not to be killed! We will first establish the objective and concrete reality that abortion is an act of violence which kills a living human being (No matter what your position on abortion, you cannot honestly argue with this premise). We will then move to the far more subjective, but no less compelling, assertion that abortion is unjust, immoral and should not be legally protected by any society which values justice and equality. We will show that unborn human beings possess everything necessary to qualify them for full protection under the law and that any criteria which disqualifies them is haphazard and could be equally applied to people outside the womb.
We will note that 34 of the 50 states in the United States currently have some form of fetal homicide laws on the books meaning that anyone* who injures or destroys an unborn human is guilty of manslaughter. The coupling of these fetal homicide laws with the Roe v. Wade decision amounts to massive legal schizophrenia in which the exact same embryo or fetus is either protected or destroyed based solely on the discretion of the mother. Attempting to rationalize this type of maternal authority outside the womb would be an utter absurdity and yet the laws of this land grant mothers a free pass to have their children destroyed by a licensed physician at anytime prior to (or during) birth.
Underneath Abort73.coms main objective is a secondary goal that is hugely significant in its own right. Whenever one examines the notions of human rights and the appropriation of personhood, you have to address the more fundamental question of where those rights come from. Why should any human life be protected? Why is the establishment of civil authority a good thing? How can we tell the difference between a good law and a bad law? These questions take us deep into the heart of competing world views, and in the process, expose the massive ideological contradictions that most Americans are today living with. For instance, if you believe that human kind arrived on planet earth through random and accidental natural processes (which is what every public school in the country teaches!), then you can have no rational basis for condemning any type of antisocial behavior, period. All moral requirement and expectation goes out the window. Whenever an evolutionist appeals to the notions of fairness, justice, equality, or right and wrong, he becomes self-contradicting. For him, there can be no absolutes, only opinions.
Abort73.com believes that the only reason human life is significant is because human beings are created beings, created by God for His glory (Isaiah 43:6,7; Colossians 1:16). We know this on the absolute authority and inerrancy of Gods Word, the Bible (II Timothy 3:16). We believe that human life transcends mere animal life because God created human beings in His own image and gave us dominion over the rest of creation (Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 9:6). We believe that civil authority is necessary and good, Gods gracious provision against the horror that would befall us were we left to the unhindered pursuit of our own corrupted appetites (Romans 13:1-7). We believe that humanity is in rebellion against its Creator and enslaved to the poisonous promises of self-exaltation (Psalm 53:2,3). We believe that the only way to be restored to a position of right-standing with a Holy God is to be united, by faith, to the substitutionary death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:4-6).
While Abort73.com anchors everything we believe on the authority and veracity of Holy Scripture, we will make our case against abortion in both the spiritual and secular realm. There is no shortage of men and women who reject the Bible while still clinging to the notion that human life is valuable and should be protected. So long as people are content to live with this inconsistency, we will compel them to be more consistent in their inconsistency by extending protection to all human beings.
After thirty years, and 43 million lives lost, there can be no measure of the devastating impact abortion has had on the fabric of this nation; to men and women, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, parents, children and grandchildren. Its shadow is everywhere. To this we say, whatever your relationship to abortion is or has been, know this. The God who created us came and walked among us, to bear the penalty for a lifetime of our most heinous sins. Abort73.com is about abortion, but more profoundly, it is about the gospel. Hear these words and rejoice.
If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. -- Romans 10:9
There can be a legal, earthly remedy to the problem of abortion, but there can also be a legal remedy to the much bigger and eternal problem of sin. We go forth to proclaim both solutions. Wont you come with us?!
